What are you making?
This tells Spurt how to plan and pace your story. You can change it later in the book's settings.
Name it
A working title is fine; you can rename it any time.
Books in the same series share one Story Bible.
What kind of story?
Pick as many genres, tropes and settings as you like, and say what you don't want. Spurt balances them for you and uses them on every request, so you never have to type them again. You can skip this and do it later.
Anything else?
Both boxes are optional. You can always add more later.
What next
Recently written
Scribble
The fast, cheap level. Spurt uses quick low-cost models and sends a smaller slice of your Story Bible with each request.
Best for: brainstorming, testing ideas, rough first drafts, and bulk drafting you'll improve later.
Draft
The everyday level. Good writing models, a smarter planner for scene plans and Bible entries, and twice as much of your Story Bible sent, so it remembers more of your world.
Best for: normal chapter writing, most of the time.
Masterpiece
The best quality Spurt can give. The strongest models, the most Story Bible context, and every new piece of writing gets a second revision pass that cuts repetition, sharpens each character's voice and strips out AI habits before you see it.
Best for: book openings, big reveals, fights, love scenes, finales and final drafts.
Chapter writer
What the Writers' Room changed
This chapter already has text
New version replaces the text with a fresh chapter from the plan. The current text is saved under Versions, so nothing is lost. Continue keeps the text and plans new scenes that pick up where it stops.
Plan the scenes first, or write your own plan, then press Write the chapter. Each scene is added to the chapter as it's written, and a memory note is made at the end.
Autopilot: write several chapters in a row
Spurt goes through the chapters one by one: plans each from its outline, writes it at the current quality level and chapter length, runs the Style Guard, and updates the memory note and continuity before moving on. You can stop it any time; it stops after the scene it's on.
Continue writes the next part, following your instruction if you gave one (it can also start an empty chapter from the instruction alone). Rewrite and Expand work on the text you highlight; if nothing is highlighted, they use the last paragraph.
Vex's verdict
Spurt's editor. Very high standards, very little patience. She reads the whole chapter and tells you what's broken and how to fix it.
Spurt and Vex are AI and can make mistakes. Check names, facts and continuity before you publish.
Versions of this chapter
Spurt saves a copy automatically before rewriting, revising or restoring, so earlier drafts are never lost. You can also save one yourself.
Outline
The map of your book: every chapter in order, grouped into volumes and arcs, with what should happen in each. The chapter writer plans from these outlines, and each written chapter keeps a short memory note of what actually happened, so Spurt doesn't repeat itself or lose track.
Generate outline with AI
Spurt plans the next chapters from your tags, directive, Story Bible and everything written so far. Empty chapters at the end get filled first; the rest are added as new chapters.
What the Writers' Room changed
Add a chapter
Story Bible
Everything Spurt should remember about your world: characters, places, factions, items, powers, lore and events. Whenever one is mentioned in the story, its entry is sent along automatically so the writing stays consistent.
Where things stand (continuity)
After each chapter, Spurt records where every character is, their condition, what they know (and wrongly believe), what they carry, and which threads are still open. The writer, planner, Vex and chat all use this, so people don't know things they never learned or jump between places.
Spurt is AI and can make mistakes. Check names, facts and continuity before you rely on them.
Import Room
Paste your old planning chats (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, anywhere), notes or brainstorms, as long and messy as they are, or pick text files. Spurt reads all of it and sorts it into Story Bible entries, chapter outlines, style rules and notes. Nothing is saved until you approve it, and anything that contradicts your Bible is flagged.
Spurt is AI and can make mistakes, especially with long, messy chats. Check entries before you save them.
Publish
Get your book out into the world. Pick where it's going, fill in the details, tick the extra pages you want (Spurt can draft most of them), check for problems, then export. Everything here saves as you type, and none of it changes your chapters.

2. Book details
3. ISBN and barcode
An ISBN is the 13-digit number that identifies one edition of a book in shops and libraries. You don't need one for web serials or a Kindle ebook. A paperback needs one.
Where do I get an ISBN?
Amazon KDP gives you a free ISBN for a paperback when you publish there. The catch is that it only works for that Amazon edition.
South Africa: the National Library of South Africa's ISBN agency issues ISBNs to South African publishers and self-publishers free of charge. You apply by email; check their current form and turnaround on the NLSA website.
Other countries each have one official agency (Bowker in the USA, Nielsen in the UK). Some charge, some are free.
Can Spurt sell me one? No. ISBN agencies don't allow ISBNs to be resold, and a resold ISBN lists the seller as the publisher, which causes problems later. Getting your own is free or cheap and keeps you as the publisher.
The barcode goes on the back cover, usually bottom right. KDP adds one automatically if you leave a white space for it; for other printers, put the SVG above into your cover design.
4. Extra pages
The pages that make a book feel finished. Tick the ones you want and write them, or press ✨ Draft it and Spurt writes a first version from your book and Story Bible for you to edit. Title page, copyright page and contents are always included.
5. Web serial options
5. Print options
Ebook cover (optional)
A JPG or PNG, ideally 1600 × 2560 pixels. It goes inside the EPUB; the stores also ask you to upload it separately.
6. Check before you publish
7. Export
Spurt is AI and can make mistakes. Read every drafted page before you publish it, and check each store's current rules, including their rules on AI-assisted books.

Ink
Ink is what Spurt runs on. Every AI action has a fixed price: 1,000 words cost 5 ink on Scribble, 10 on Draft and 40 on Masterpiece; a Vex critique is 50, a revision 30, a chat message 2. Planning, memory notes and the Style Guard are free. Ink packs never expire.

Author's directive
Book
Vex's tone (all books)
Her standards never drop. This only changes how she delivers the bad news.
Style Guard (all books)
It scans for writing-AI habits (the same comparison over and over, "not X, but Y", repeated phrases, stock phrases) and fixes just those sentences with a cheap model, usually for a fraction of a cent. A copy is saved under Versions first.
Ink (all books)
Ink is how Spurt counts usage, with fixed prices so you never watch a money meter. 1,000 words cost 5 ink on Scribble, 10 on Draft and 40 on Masterpiece; a Vex critique is 50, a revision 30 and a chat message 2. Planning, memory notes, the Style Guard and backups are free.
Content rules
Payment companies (Visa and Mastercard, through every adult payment processor) only allow certain things in sex scenes. With the rules on, Spurt writes within them, locks the tags that break them, and checks every new sexual scene, quietly rewriting any part that breaks a rule. Violence, horror and dark themes without sex are not affected. Sexual content involving anyone under 18 is never allowed, whatever this is set to.
Use Spurt on your phone
While Spurt runs on this laptop, your phone can use it over the same home Wi-Fi.
- Start Spurt with Start Spurt.bat (or
python -m uvicorn main:app --host 0.0.0.0). If Windows asks about the firewall, allow it on private networks only. - On your phone, connected to the same Wi-Fi, open one of the addresses below in Chrome.
- In Chrome's menu, choose Add to Home screen to get a Spurt icon like an app.
Only do this on your own home Wi-Fi: anyone on the same network could open Spurt. Never on public Wi-Fi.
Tips
Backups (all books)
Spurt copies all your books into the data\backups folder inside C:\Spurt every few hours and keeps the last 30 copies. A backup on the same laptop won't survive the laptop dying, so download one now and then to a USB stick, OneDrive or Google Drive.
Models (all books, advanced)
Leave these on Auto to follow your quality level. Picking a model here overrides the level for that job.
